11. Switching Between Individual and Joint Filing
11. Switching between individual and joint filing
This topic currently has no dedicated help article. The questions below represent the most common inquiries from firms needing to convert a case between individual and joint filing.
11.1 My client started as an individual filer but now needs to file jointly with their spouse. How do I switch?
Glade does not support converting an existing individual workflow to a joint workflow in a single click. The recommended process is:
Initiate a new workflow for the client and select Joint as the filing type at the start
Add the spouse as Debtor 2 during workflow initiation — you'll be prompted to enter their name, email, and phone number
Re-assign the client questionnaire and document requests from the new workflow
Re-pull the credit report to include both debtors (B2B: pull jointly; B2C: both debtors approve separately from their portal)
In the Income Organizer, add a separate income source for the spouse's income
In the Schedules Builder, confirm Schedule J reflects joint household expenses and Form 122A-1 includes both debtors' income
11.2 My client was set up as joint but should be individual. How do I remove Debtor 2?
⚠️ Removing a Debtor 2 after the questionnaire has been submitted can cause form issues — the Means Test may flip between 122A-1 and 122A-2. Contact Glade support before making changes so we can guide you through without corrupting the schedules data.
11.3 What changes when I switch between individual and joint?
Joint — both debtors' signatures required on all forms; spouse income included in Means Test; Schedule J reflects joint household expenses
Individual — only primary debtor's signature required; only primary debtor's income included; Schedule J reflects single household
The Means Test income window reflects one vs. two income earners
