Workflow Handoffs
Workflow Handoffs
What are Workflow Handoffs?
Workflow Handoffs allow you to transfer case ownership between team members at specific steps in your bankruptcy workflow. Think of handoffs as passing the baton from one team to another as the case progresses through different stages of preparation.
How Workflow Handoffs Work
Initial Assignment vs. Handoffs
When a new workflow is created, it's automatically assigned to a default team based on your Workflow Owners settings. This initial assignment determines who owns the case from the start—no handoff needed.
Example: At Example Law Firm, new workflows are assigned to the Documents Team by default. The Documents Team handles the first several steps without any handoffs:
Initial document collection
Credit report review
Client questionnaire (client-facing, no team involvement)
When to Use Handoffs
Use a handoff when case ownership needs to transfer from one team member or role to another.
At Example Law Firm:
First Handoff: After the client questionnaire is complete, the workflow hands off to a Paralegal for the client review call
Second Handoff: After the paralegal completes petition preparation and client review, the workflow hands off to an Attorney for final review
Steps Without Handoffs
If the same team member continues working through multiple consecutive steps, no handoff is required. Simply leave those steps set to "No Handoff".
Configuring Handoffs
To set up a handoff:
Navigate to the workflow step where ownership should transfer
Select the handoff option (the interface will display "Handoff the case to...")
Choose the team member or role who should receive the case
When that step is triggered, the system will require the handoff before proceeding
Important Notes
Handoffs represent ownership transfer, not just step assignment
If a handoff is configured as required, you must complete it to trigger the next steps in the workflow
The updated interface language now clearly distinguishes between "handoffs" and "assignments" to reduce confusion
